Jugendstilsenteret and KUBE – Ålesund
The Knowledge Lab
Our Knowledge Lab in the museum basement is an arena for discussion, research, and education, focusing on building conservation and architecture. The exhibition shows the characteristics of art nouveau architecture and the history of Apotekergården. It also discusses the dispute over Rønnebergvillaen and Ålesund city hall, focusing on how the art nouveau buildings have been treated in the aftermath of the rebuilding of the city after the great fire in 1904.

The Knowledge Lab is located in the basement of the Art Nouveau centre. The conditions of the basement present an initial challenge as a gallery for exhibitions, because of the risk for flooding from groundwater. The architecture and furniture have been especially designet to withstand eventual floods. The Art Nouveau centre is an arena for sharing knowledge pertaining to conservation of art nouveau architecture, and the Knowledge Lab is a living and dynamic room which in itself exemplifies some of the challenges that come with preserving historic buildings.
The Knowledge Lab will eventually also house temporary exhibitions on crafts and trade connected to art nouveau architecture.
