Marit Helen Akslen: Lost Connections
Jugendstilsenteret og KUBE are proud to present the Norwegian textile artist Marit Helen Akslen´s works in the exhibition Lost Connections.
5 Nov 2021 – 27 Feb 2022
For over twenty years, Marit Helen Akslen (b. 1971, Ålesund) has worked intensely with textiles in a variety of expressive styles, in the search for an idiom capable of articulating what we find disturbing and chaotic. Tackling socially difficult themes, working through them, and challenging our views about the world and the age in which we live amount to a guiding principle in Akslen’s art. From the very beginning, she has been consistent in her artistic approach, invariably applying a feminist and political perspective in works that observe, describe and criticise events, circumstances and phenomena. At the same time, her work highlights the need for change, insisting not least that as humans we reassess our relationship with the natural world.
Lost Connections is Akslen’s first solo museum exhibition and the most extensive presentation of her art to date. Since graduating from the Bergen National Academy of the Arts in 2000, Akslen has made a name for herself as a textile artist with an unmistakable signature. With a number of new creations plus a selection of seminal works from the past twenty years, the exhibition fills KUBE’s two main floors.
