Storeggen of Aalesund

From the 1870s, large parts of the fishing grounds in the Norwegian Sea, the North Sea and the North Atlantic were dominated by bankline vessels. These boats represented a revolution in the fishing area called «havnåmet». But the bankline vessels were outcompeted by steamships in the early 1900s, and none of the old vessels in western Norway were preserved in their original condition, which lead to the last one disappearing in 1915.

Kjell Holm Foundation

In 2012 the Kjell Holm Foundation announced they wanted to build a replica of a bankline vessel, with the aim to shed light on an almost forgotten era in the maritime history of Sunnmøre. Sunnmøre Museum took over the vessel when it was finished in 2016. «Storeggen of Aalesund» is today the flagship of the foundation Viti, and has become an important public conveyor of history.

Trips Aboard The Bank Vessel Storeggen

In the mid-19th century, Ålesund became the centre for the fishing industry in the region and eventually for Norway as a whole. Around the same time, the first ocean-going fishing boats were being built. Storeggen of Ålesund is a replica of a bank vessel from the 1890s. It is now available to hire for various types of trips:

Fishing

Embark on a fishing trip that is completely out of the ordinary. You can fish with a rod from the boat deck – perhaps you’ll catch a Borgundfjord cod? There is fishing equipment on board the boat for use by guests.

Sailing

Sailing with Storeggen doesn’t require any previous experience, but we would like you to muck in. Skilled instructors will make you feel a part of the crew and help you experience the feeling of sailing a historical fishing boat.

Sightseeing

Come aboard and enjoy the fjord and the scenery of Sunnmøre at a leisurely pace. The tour takes you around the fjords and islands near Ålesund.

The boat normally departs from the Fisheries Museum, but other departure points are possible by prior agreement.
