The exhibition

The museum is built around the remains of four houses that stood in Borgund some one thousand years ago.

Ref. 1. The largest building is the årestova house, which stood exactly where it stands today. The åre is the open hearth or fireplace. The house, which is on two levels, was probably a mead hall. The timbers are original, and encircling the house are the remains of a stone mound thought to have been around one metre thick. Only a few objects have been found: a few fishing sinkers made from soapstone and an amber bead.
Ref. 2. In the 12th century people began moving their fireplaces into the corner, like in this house. Here we have found net sinkers, spindle whorls, children’s shoes, trinkets made from wood and fragments of a soapstone lamp.
Ref. 3. This is probably a stabbur (food store). Here we have found fragments of shoes, pieces of soapstone pots, a wooden seat for a stool along with other wooden items such as spoons, ladles and pots.
